What is a CBCT Scan and Why Might it be Recommended?

CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It’s a specialized type of 3D X-ray that provides detailed images of the bones and soft tissues of the face, head, and neck.
Unlike traditional 2D X-rays, CBCT scans give a 360° view of the structures affecting breathing, swallowing, tongue posture, and jaw alignment—all of which are essential to orofacial development.

We often collaborate with airway-focused dentists, ENTs, and orthodontists who use CBCT images to inform care decisions like expansion, surgery, or nasal interventions.
How Does OM Therapy Fit in?
Orofacial myofunctional therapy focuses on function—how the muscles of the face, mouth, and throat work together to support optimal breathing, speech, chewing, swallowing, and rest posture.
But structure and function go hand in hand. If the airway is narrow or the tongue has no room to rest on the palate, muscle exercises alone may not achieve the best results.
That’s where CBCT scans come in. They help us determine:
✅ Whether structural concerns are contributing to dysfunctional habits
✅ If a referral to an ENT or airway dentist is appropriate
✅ Whether the timing is right for therapy, expansion, or other interventions
✅ How to create a treatment plan tailored to each individual’s anatomy
We believe in a collaborative approach to treatment. A CBCT scan gives us the kind of detailed information that helps your whole healthcare team work together—so your OMT program is more effective and long-lasting.
If you have questions about whether a CBCT scan may be beneficial for your child (or yourself), don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to review options and coordinate with your other providers.
