Is it ADHD or Airway? The Brain-Breathing Connections

When a child struggles with focus, attention, or behavior, it’s easy to assume the root cause is developmental or behavioral. But what if we told you… breathing could be part of the picture? The way your child breathes directly impacts how their brain functions.

Nasal breathing (breathing through the nose) helps:

  • Deliver optimal oxygen to the brain

  • Support attention, focus, and memory

  • Regulate the nervous system

Mouth breathing, on the other hand, can:

  • Reduce oxygen efficiency

  • Disrupt sleep quality

  • Lead to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating

Over time, this can look a lot like:

  • Inattention

  • Hyperactivity

  • Poor impulse control

  • Struggles in the classroom

Signs to Watch Out for:

  • Open-mouth posture during the day

  • Snoring or restless sleep

  • Difficulty sitting still or focusing

  • Frequent fatigue or “low energy”

  • Dark circles under the eyes

Why This Matters

If breathing is contributing to your child’s challenges, addressing it can unlock progress in ways you might not expect.

At Midwest Myofunctional Specialists, we focus on:

✔️ Restoring proper nasal breathing

✔️ Improving oral muscle function

✔️ Supporting better sleep and overall regulation

The Bottom Line

Not all focus challenges are behavioral—and not all solutions are found in the classroom. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple (and as powerful) as how your child breathes.
